Melamchi Diversion Scheme (MDS):    

Includes diversion weir, desilting basin, 26 km tunnel, 25 km adit access road, 18 km main access road, and upgrading of 22 km approach road

The main components of the MDS are

Adit Access Road 

  • Sundarijal Access Road – Sundarijal near hydropower station to Sundarijal Adit at Mahankal of total 1.7 km. 

  • Sindhu Access Road - From Sindhu river and Melamchi river confluence at Bahunepati to Sindhu Adit of total 15.7 km. 

  • Gyalthum Access Road – From Gyalthum river and Melamchi river confluence to Gyalthum Adit of total 4.3 km.  

  • Ambatham Access Road – From Timbu river and Melamchi river confluence to Ambatham Adit of total 1.9 km.

Water Treatment Plant (WTP): 170 MLD plant at Mahankal in Kathmandu 

Bulk Distribution System (BDS): 54 km of bulk transmission mains (300 to 1,400 mm diameter) and ten storage reservoirs around the Kathmandu Valley with capacity of 72,000m3. 

Distribution Network Improvement (DNI): Recruitment of a Private Operator for water supply management and rehabilitation and extension of existing facilities. 

Wastewater System Improvement (WSI): Includes rehabilitation of the existing sewer networks and treatment plants. 

Social and Environmental Support 

Social Uplift Program (SUP): Includes buffer zone development, health, education, income generation and community development, and rural electrification 

Resettlement Action Plan (RAP): Implementation for compensation for acquiring or leasing land parcels

A hygiene and education program in Kathmandu Valley and a public awareness program in the Project area. 

A groundwater monitoring program, and  

An Environmental Management Plan (EMP). 

Kathmandu Valley Water Management Support Project
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved two loans under the Kathmandu Valley Water Services Sector Development Program (KVWSSDP) to support the Government's package of institutional reforms in Kathmandu Valley. These loans will be used for the restructuring of NWSC, as well as the establishment of three key entities - the Water Authority (WA), the Water Utility Operator (WUO), and the National Water Supply Regulatory Board (NWSRB).
